We will be exploring how the body defends and repairs itself. Today we will talk about the first line of defense which is the Epithelium, The first line of defense is our skin which acts as a physical barrier between the outside world and the delicate machinery of our bodies, the outer layer is composed of keratin which is a protein formed in the surface cells of the skin.
Beneath the layer of keratin are the cells of the epidermis a layer several cells thick and held together by tight intercellular connections. The innermost or basal layer of the epidermis is composed of cells that frequently divide, forming more cells that move outward as they mature, which form keratin, and finally shed making way for new cells. This is how our skin constantly renews itself.
The epithelium is a layer of cells that are bound together tightly to form sheets. These continuous sheets cover different surfaces of your body that can come into contact with foreign substances. Since there are several different epithelial cell types, the epithelium performs several different essential functions. Even though the epithelium is constantly fighting toxins, infections, and transformation, it typically manages to keep itself relatively healthy. In turn, this keeps you healthy.
